The Power of How: A journal about The Alexander Technique and Movement

TURN THE CLOCK BACK ON YOUR CRANKY OLD BODY WITH THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE

The Alexander Technique is a simple, practical learning method to help you recover and maintain pleasurable mobility throughout your life. A skilled professional Alexander Teacher can make all the difference for you in learning how to stay active, mobile, and happy even if you have physical limitations. It’s never too late to learn about your body and how it works, so that you can use it better and enjoy it even more than you might have in your youth.

Aging means that your body is constantly changing. That means that you need to learn how to be flexible in the demands that you make on yourself. When to push through a little discomfort, and when to stop pushing so hard; when to adjust your activities to your body’s needs, instead of adjusting your body to activity that others expect from you. Recent research shows that it may not be necessary for you to exercise as much or as vigorously as our youth-centered culture suggests. Just 2.5 hours of light physical activity a week (like walking, vacuuming your house, etc) can be enough to make the difference between disability and wellness.

Getting regular exercise significantly reduces the risk of suffering from many health problems for folks over the age of 60, including these top conditions for which you might be at risk:

Obesity

Depression

Osteoporosis

Type 2 Diabetes

Cardiovascular Disease

High Cholestorol

But how can you keep exercising when your aging body is getting really cranky? Yes, your body does start to slow down, ache, break, and creak! I’ve been very active my whole life, I’m very healthy, but I still have a few aches and pains and I am only 51! Even if you don’t have any serious health problems, daily aches and pains can begin to prevent you from enjoying movement and exercise.  Low level fear and a vague sense of vulnerability with can start to creep into your life, causing you to be too cautious.  You start doing less and less, until you find yourself in a state of depression and inactivity. I’m here to tell you that when this happens, it doesn’t mean you will forever loose the feeling of pleasure in moving your body. I believe that it’s never too late pay attention to your mobility, the true source of all physicality.

Through the educational modality called the Alexander Technique, coordination, ease, and confidence can replace muscle power and straining ourselves in daily movements. I have seen my older students bounce back from injury and surgery much more quickly than expected. Images of older folks in our culture are not exactly encouraging. The reality is, you need to take control of your own health and wellness. With continued Alexander lessons, all my students have been able to recover and even improve their pre-injury mobility and have also been able to minimize hours spent worrying about recovery. All that is required is curiosity and a willingness to learn and practice what you learn. It’s up to you!

I teach Alexander Technique lessons in Manhattan and Bay Ridge. I’m happy to answer any questions you might have via phone or email.
